Year 4, Day 358 (Explorer 2 Duna Mission Announced!)

KSEA excitedly announces that is their goal  to land Kerbals on Duna – and the team has already been picked!  Mitster, the commander of the Explorer 1 mission is chosen as the most experienced Kerbal at the KSC, while Dunwin and Kimmy are chosen as the brightest of the new recruits!  Everyone is very excited at the new Mission Patches too!

Explorer2Patch

“Wow – what an awesome patch!  I can’t wait to blast off to Duna!”

-Mitster

Explorer 2 won’t be the first craft to visit Duna however… Frontier 6 is currently in orbit of Duna, and has revealed interesting data about the red world of Duna, including multiple dips into the atmosphere that have indicated a landing is quite possible… however the actual content of the surface is still unknown.

The mission to Duna will be done in three parts:

  • The Duna Surveyor has already been launched, and will enter a polar orbit of Duna, mapping the biomes and charting altitudes of terrains.  Surveyor was launched with a lot of fuel, so the departure to Duna will be in just 60 days!  This will give Duna Surveyor a good 30 days to map at least some of Duna before Explorer 2 arrives!Duna Spaceporta.png
  • A space station, to be called Duna Spaceport, along with a lander, will be launched into an equatorial orbit of Duna, providing a home in space, and fuel reserves for multiple landings.  The station will launch with the Research Lander stowed above it in the fairing, and move to its proper docking port once the station arrives at Duna. Besides an onboard science lab, the Duna Spaceport will feature some of the most impressive deep space habitats available – the Observation Lounge for the crew to relax in is one of the most notable features of the station, with its giant windows!  DunaLander2.png
  • The Duna Spaceport Research Lander is a re-usable lander, designed to land on Duna and return to the Spaceport to refuel.  The vehicle carries an array of all the most sophisticated scientific instruments known to Kerbal-kind!Duna Crew Vehicle.png
  • A crew vehicle and habitat module will be the last component, taking a crew of three in an Aurora Crew Vehicle, which for simplicity sake is being called the Crew Vehicle Mk. 6) with a habitat module similar to those found on the KSS and other space stations stowed below. Once in orbit a docking and transposition maneuver will be undertaken, and the craft will travel to Duna, docking with the Space Station there!  The crew vehicle and habitat section will return to Kerbin, while the station and lander will will remain in orbit for future missions.

Explorer 2 has led to the development of several new technologies and innovations.  The innovative use of existing Aurora-era technologies combined with the habitats developed for the Orbital Station above Kerbin, Mun, and Minmus, and the utterly massive Sarnux X Launch Vehicle, which will claim the title of “most powerful machine ever built” upon its completion!

Dunwin is informed of his place on the mission while he’s on-mission, on the surface of Mun:screenshot1342.png

“Uh – Dunwin – the Administrator’s got something he needs to tell you. Pretty important.”

“Uh oh!”

-Dunwin

Dunwin – you’re going to DUNA with Kimmy and Mitster!  Congratulations!

Ow wow!!!   I can’t wait!

-Dunwin

screenshot1349.pngKimmy, on Harmony Space Station above Minmus, is just as excited!

“Oh wow – I get to go!?   I can’t wait!”

-Kimmy

Back at KSC, Mitster is itching to get some more experience in before the flight to Duna!

“I need to be ready for anything!”

-Mitster

Year 4, Day 357 (Unity Space Station Landing 2)

LandingMapMun.png

Mission Planners announce the next Mun Landing site:  USS-LS02-A, the rim of the East Crater, and USS-LS02-B, the center of the crater!  This time it’s Luly and Dunwin’s turn to head down! screenshot1319.png

Dunwin, a rookie scientist, is excited that his first Space mission is a Mun landing!  With the RCS and LFO fuel reloaded on the Research Lander, Luly and Dunwin head down!screenshot1323.png

Wait!  Wait!  Mission Control!  I see something out the window!!

-Dunwin

screenshot1325.pngThere’s little time for anyone to react, and the lander sets down in the East Crater!

screenshot1326.png

Luly and Dunwin hop out, and while Luly conducts the scientific experiments for the missions, Dunwin jumps in place, excited to check out the strange formation he saw!

“OK – let’s get back in the lander and head up there!  That must be the anomaly Mission Control wanted us to check out, at USS-LS02-B!”

-Luly

screenshot1327.png

The Research Lander takes off!

“There it is – an arch, just like you said.  Strange!”

-Luly

screenshot1329.png

The Lander sets down a short distance from the strange… Arch.

screenshot1330.png

“Let’s head up there and check it out!”

-Luly

Luly takes off, to land on TOP of the Arch!

screenshot1332.png

Dunwin isn’t far behind!

screenshot1333.png

The two are very excited with their discovery!

Year 4, Day 350 (X-5 Research Mission 1)

x5 research missions.png

A new research mission to study Kerbin is launched.  The X-5 will be taken out by Mitster and Orlas – recently returned from Eve! A Gravity Sensor is installed in the cargo bay. screenshot1255.png

“Here we go! Reaching optimal altitude for the X-5… 9000km!”

-Mitster

screenshot1260.png

The X-5 flies over X5RM01-A – and Orlas notices something!

Looks like we made a mapping error – woops!  The X-5 has already explored this canyon, and the Monolith that’s down there!

-Orlas

We better keep moving anyway… that looks like it would be a tricky landing!

-Mitster

screenshot1264.png

X5RM01-B isn’t very far away, and Mitster takes the X-5 down for a landing.  Orlas hops out, and checks the scientific instruments… then the jet takes off again!

screenshot1278.png

Hey – will you look at that!  One of the ground stations for communications – cool!

-Orlas

Mitster takes the X-5 down to X5RM01-C!

screenshot1280.png

Certainly there’s some staff at that communications station that could have done this survey?   Ah well.  The X-5 takes off… heading north!

screenshot1283.png

Better turn on the cabin heaters… it’s getting chilly!

-Mitster

screenshot1292.png

“Ok – this is the site where orbital sensors indicated a strange anomaly. I’m going out to check it out!”

-Orlas

screenshot1295.png

Oh wow!  Mitster, get out and check this out!

-Orlas

Orlas runs toward what looks like a crashed … saucer of some kind!

screenshot1299.png

Mitster puts on the parking brake and climbs out….

screenshot1309.png

Then runs to meet up with Orlas at the crashed saucer!

screenshot1311.png

“Wow!  They’ll never believe this back at KSC!  We better take lots of pictures and samples!”

-Orlas

screenshot1312.png

It’s starting to get pretty late… so Mitster and Orlas take off, and head back to KSC.

screenshot1315.png

Thankfully, there’s justenough fuel to reach the Space Center!

screenshot1318.png

Orlas and Mitster hop out of the X-5 and rush to tell the others about their exciting discoveries!  The X-5 is brought in to be refurbished.

Year 4, Day 348 (Harmony Research Lander Returns to Station!)

screenshot1253.pngKimmy and Gilian return to Harmony Space Station!  They’ll rest for a few days before the next landing.

“There’s so much interesting science to find here on Minmus!  Building a station was really smart, we don’t have to have a big Sarnus V launch every time we want to check something out!”

-Kimmy

“Yea, but rocket launches are pretty exciting…”

-Gilian

Year 4, Day 348 (Harmony Space Station Landing 2!)

screenshot1224.pngKimmy and Gilian head down for the next landing, at HSSLS02-A – the Minmus North Pole! screenshot1226.png

“It’s really pretty.. but eeriy up here!  ”

-Gilian

screenshot1228.png

The Lander takes off, and heads south to HSSLS02-B -The Highlands!

screenshot1234.png

“I think I see something just north of the landing site!”

-Kimmy

Kimmy heads off in her jetpack to check out the strange anomaly… screenshot1236.png

It’s another Monolith!

screenshot1238.png

Kimmy and Gilian both do a thorough examination of the strange … structure?  It appears to have the same dimensions as the one near the Space Center, and found elsewhere on Kerbin! screenshot1248.png

The next stop is HSSLS02-C, the Minmus Flats (Not to be confused with the Greater Flats, or the Lesser Flats – these Flats are just Flat.)

screenshot1251.png

Kimmy collects the important science from the flats, while Gilian double checks the Lander.   The crew will remain on the surface for roughly a day, then head home!

Year 4, Day 344 (Unity Space Station Mun Landing!)

screenshot1210.pngLuly and Edan head down to USSLS01-A – the Highlands, on the first adventure of the Unity Space Station science team!

screenshot1214.png

Edan and Luly touch down successfully in the Highlands, near the Southwest Crater!  Kimmy performs the required science experiments for the mission, Edan spends most of the time jumping around! screenshot1215.png

The lander does a quick jump over to the Southwest Crater itself!

screenshot1218.png

Another great landing!

“This second landing really pushed our fuel resererves – I think for future landings, we should keep it limited to just one site – especially for landings so far from the Mun’s equator!”

-Edan

screenshot1219.pngThe Unity Lander takes off, to dock with the Space Station, then docks!  Edan transfers the science gathered back to the Aurora 16 Command Module, while Luly takes some time to rest before the next landing!

MunUSSLS01

The first landing is a great success!  The distance from the equator really put fuel reserves to the test.. the lander returned with barely enough fuel… not as safe as KSEA likes!   Still, a great adventure for Luly and Edan!

Year 4, Day 340 (First Unity Space Station Landings Planned)

MunUSSLS01.png

Mission Planners announce the first destinations of the Unity Space Station Science teams!   The first landing will be at USSLS01-A, in the Highlands.  Next, the lander will perform a short jump and land in the Southwest Crater.  From there, the lander will return to Unity Station and the next team will head down!

A scientist will be required for each landing, so Luly will get the most time on Mun! Tentatively, the crew rotation will be:

  • Landing 1:  Luly, Edan
  • Landing 2:  Luly, Dunwin
  • Landing 3: Luly, Kerlorf
  • Landing 4: Luly, Seely

This should let all crew on the station get some experience!

Year 4, Day 339 (Unity Station Arrives at Mun!)

screenshot1198.pngAurora 16 blasts off, taking Edan, Dunwin, and Kerlorf on their way to Mun (and with them, the new Lander that Unity Space Station will need!)

screenshot1199.png

Aurora 16 will also be a test of the new second stage for the Sarnus V Heavy – a mono-propellant based engine called the LV-601-4.  screenshot1203.png

Success!  Aurora 16 arrives at Mun.  First, the lander heads over… screenshot1208.png

Then the Command Module docks with the station.

“Wow! Quite the crowd up here!”

-Luly

Luly is correct – along with her, Seely, Edan, Dunwin, and Kerlorf are staying on the station for a decent amount of time.  The crew is mostly rookies, at least in regards to landing on other worlds!  Each of the crew will get a chance to head down and investigate a different region of Mun.  It should be quite teh adventure!
