Year 3, Day 274 (Frontier 5 heads to Jool!)

screenshot258.pngFrontier 5’s computer is instructed to commence its burn to Jool!  The probe will reach Jool around Year 6, Day 200, after a journey of 2 years and 370 days!

If calculations are right, specifically encounter Jool’s innermost moon, Laythe!  After the Laythe flyby, an attempt will be made to circularize orbit in the Joolian system.  Having never attempted such a thing, no one knows how it will go down!

Year 3, Day 183 (Aurora 13 passes Minmus Orbit)

screenshot213.pngAurora 13 passes beyond the orbit of Minmus, carrying Kerbals further into space than ever!  screenshot214.png

“Exciting!  This is the first true solar science experiment ever done!”
-Orlas

Orlas hops out and conducts some experiments….screenshot215.png

Then the rest of the crew takes their own chances at a quick spacewalk!

“It’s so pretty… and Kerbin looks so … small!”
-Mitster

screenshot217.png

“The Damage to the hull doesn’t look so bad from out here!”
-Chrisnic

Everyone’s a bit confused about Chrisnic’s non sequitur, since no one even mentioned any hull damage… but once everyone’s had some fun, Mitster pilots Aurora 13 back into Kerbin Space, on a course toward Minmus!

Back on Kerbin, Frontier 9 launches, also heading to Minmus!

Year 3, Day 169 (Frontier 8 Launches, Aurora 13 Construction, Explorer Crews)

Frontier 8, the probe to Moho is rolled out to the launch pad!  With a launch window coming up in 60 days, scientists are hopeful that the Frontier-probe design will be tough enough to survive a trip so close to the sun!   The launch goes well, and Frontier 8 sits in orbit, waiting for the launch window in about 60 days!

3 other Frontier Probes remain in storage:  Frontier 5 (Jool), Frontier 6 (Duna), and Frontier 7 (Neidon.)

Work also begins on Frontier 9, a survey probe for Minmus!

Additionally, construction starts on Aurora 13!   Aurora 13 and 14 will carry two different crews beyond Kerbin’s sphere of influence as training for the long flight to Eve. The entire KSC complex is abuzz with gossip regarding who the “Explorer 6” will be!  Even if a Kerbal is chosen to be one of the 6… only 3 Kerbals will ultimately be Explorer’s crew!  However, the runner up crew will most likely be in line for the next Deep Space Vehicle!

Year 3, Day 125 (Frontier 4 Probe To Urlum Launches)

screenshot150.png

Frontier 4 launches!  This time, Urlum is the target!  Each of these probes are a calculated risk.. but an important one. Before more advanced missions to the outer planets can be conducted, simple questions like “Will the solar panels get enough power?” and “Will the radio actually reach that far” need to be answered firmly, not just on graph paper! Frontier 4 will reach Urlum at the start of Year 7… in 3 years and 200 or so days!

Year 3, Day 120 (Frontier 3 Probe to Neidon Launches)

screenshot149.png

Frontier 3, bound for Neidon, is rolled out of the VAB and launched!  Frontier 4 will be done shortly, and will itself head to Urlum!

“These probe launches are expensive!  It’s taking all of our budget to launch them!”
-Jeb

“We have to!  The launch windows won’t be ideal for much longer… then we can get back to Mun launches!”
-Orlas

The trip to Neidon is a long one!  The estimated encounter date will be Year 9, Day 270… in nearly 6 years!

Year 3, Day 89 (Frontier Probe Construction)

256x256-4Development on the Frontier probes to Sarnus is finally complete!  Construction begins on two of the probes:  Frontier 1’s mission is to reach Sarnus as soon as possible – this will allow testing of long range communications equipment to ensure that future probes can even be contacted!  Frontier 2 will take a more fuel efficient journey, with the gamble that the communications and power systems work at the extreme ranges the mission requires.  Once KSEA knows the answers to these questions more advanced missions to Sarnus will be possible!

Year 3, Day 78 (Development Begins on Frontier Probes)

Work begins on developing Frontier 1 & 2, the first probes being sent to Sarnus!  Appropriately enough, the probes will each be launched atop the Sarnus V rocket.

The probes are an entirely new design and due to the enormous distances, will require more DeltaV than any craft yet launched!

256x256-11Each probe will carry on it a plaque that will attempt to explain where the Kerbals came from… hopefully some signs of the Ogres, the creatures believed to have sent that first probe that crashed on Kerbin so long ago, may see it!

Construction also begins on a new Surveyor probe… this time for Mun.  The craft, cleverly named “Mun Surveyor” should be ready soon!

Additionally, construction begins on Aurora 11, the next Mun Mission!  This time Glenica and Kimmy are at the front of the line!
